Joe Mayo, tenor saxophonist, clarinetist, and flutist, hails from Windsor, CT. He received a Master of Music degree at Purchase College Conservatory of Music in the Jazz Performance program. During his studies at Purchase, he has been a member of the Purchase Jazz Orchestra in which he performed with saxophonist/composer/arranger Bob Mintzer. While at Purchase, Mayo studied privately with tenor saxophonist Ralph Lalama and trumpeter Scott Wendholt. He has played in Purchase Jazz Combos led by pianists Charles Blenzig and Hal Galper, as well as saxophonist Jimmy Greene.
Outside of Purchase, he is a freelance musician and enjoys teaching private lessons. He has taught saxophone and clarinet extens ively at a high school in Amherst and teaches children and adults in New York. Mayo earned his Bachelors in Music at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in Jazz and African American studies. While at UMass, he studied classical saxophone with Professor Lynn Klock and jazz saxophone with Adam Kolker. He also performed and recorded with the University of Massachusetts Jazz Studio Orchestra, winner of several DownBeat awards. Joe Mayo is currently a student of Eric Alexander.
