As a solo pianist, Frederic Shih began to give recitals in May, 1999. He toured through Taiwan, conducting performances in celebrated concert halls, including Recital Hall of National Chang Kai Shek Cultural Center, Chih Teh Hall of Kaohsiung Cultural Center, Huai Jen Hall of Fu-Jen University. He received a bachelor’s degree in piano performance from Mu sic Conservatory of Fu Jen University, and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in piano performance from State University of New York at Purchase. His piano teachers include Shu Hua Tzeng, and Paul Ostrovsky, a pupil of Yakov Flier and Emil Giles. Mr. Shih has been named a laureate of the Taiwan Music Competition. As an accompianist Mr. Shih also led Fu-jen University Chamber Choir to tour Japan, performing in Osaka, Tokyo, and Nagoya. As a composer, Mr. Shih composed for solo piano, four hands on one piano, flute and piano ensemble, choir and Electone. As a writer, his “100 Best Historical Recordings” was published in 1999. Another writing of his, “Practical Muscle Training for Pianists” is going to be published in 2009.

Mr. Shih has worked for Yamaha Music Foundation, one of the largest music education institutes in Japan and Taiwan. As a teacher, advisor and manager, Mr. Shih coached Yamaha music teachers and students in piano, composition/arrangement, harmony and orchestration. His students include winners of the Taiwan Music Competition and Junior Original Concerts in Taiwan.

Mr. Shih believes that a music educator should foster the music sensitivity that everyone is born with, and helps his students develop the ability and skills necessary to enjoy playing, appreciate and ultimately share the joys of music with others. Music education can open many new doors in people’s lives and the appreciation and enjoyment of music will only make the world and human life more beautiful.
