Age 11 & Up
With the oversight of some of todayŪs leading jazz musicians, students enrolled in this class will explore jazz improvisation through training in the traditional instruments of the jazz ensemble, including piano, guitar, flute, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, bass, and drums. The course covers improvisation, listening skills, and musical adeptness and style with the goal of mastering the art of žlocking into a groove.Ó Additionally, lessons in basic jazz theory prepare students for studio classes, during which they play together in jazz style žjam sessions.Ó
Our Bedford jazz ensemble meets on Mondays from 6:00-6:45pm at St. Matthew's Church and is taught by Luke Batson

Jazz & Rock Improvisation
Age 8 & Up
This course is beneficial to musicians of all styles, instruments, and experience. Through the technical aspects of jazz and rock music, the goal of this course is to further the studentsŪ improvisational skills and styles. Teachers will familiarize students with the basics of chord changes and from there, move into training in how to improvise upon them. Other topics covered include chord-scales and composition.
Age 8 & Up
Similar to our žComposition & SongwritingÓ course, Jazz Composition offers students the opportunity to create their own music in our recording studio, specifically in the jazz style. Students will be taught the basics of melody, harmony, and musical structure within the jazz context. Throughout the semester, students will keep a running portfolio of original pieces and emerge from the course with an impressive repertoire and their own CD.
