Secondary Instrument Classes for Beginners
Beginning classes for secondary instruments are offered to give all campers the opportunity to learn a new instrument in a class setting. The course’s emphasis is on fundamental technique, for students with no previous experience in the secondary instrument.
Jazz Percussion Ensemble
The percussion ensemble is an exciting introduction to playing percussion instruments. Using a variety of percussion instruments students learn to play basic rhythm patterns, improvise and compose their own music. Advanced students perform on a variety of orchestral percussion instruments in polyrhythmic modes.
Jazz & Rock Improvisation
This class explores jazz and rock improvisation through performance on instruments of the jazz or rock ensemble: piano, guitar, flute, saxophone, clarinet, bass, drums, and others. Students learn jazz theory and play together in jam sessions.
Piano Ensemble
This class will perform piano literature written for one piano-four hands, two pianos-four hands, and two pianos-eight hands. Previous piano study is required.
Chamber Ensemble
Chamber music ensembles are open to young instrumentalists who wish to play duos, trios, quartets and other mixed ensembles. The groups are formed according to levels of proficiency as determined by placement on the first day of camp. Chamber music emphasizes the principles of team play, active listening, and collaboration.
Using advanced, up-to-date computer software along with a keyboard, this exciting class offers students the opportunity to create and record their own music. Students will be trained in the use of MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) sequencing software, and will gain a basic knowledge in the art of arranging notes and rhythms into original compositions.
Studio Art
Using traditional, fine art methods, Studio Art gives campers the opportunity to visually express their perception of the world around them through painting, drawing and sculpture. By actively sparking their imagination through visual stimulation, students will enjoy the fun of creative expression and gain a sense of accomplishment. Students also have the opportunity to create the scenery for our theatrical production.
Musical Theater
The focus of our camp, musical theater classes are designed to introduce young actors to the challenges and excitement of performing on the musical theater stage. In addition to the actual performing experience, the students will build self-confidence and communications skills that are so important in theater as well as in everyday life. Students will learn about performing through various lessons, improvisational activities and games, culminating in the production of a Broadway show which gives every student the chance to appear on stage. Performances will take place at the end of the summer session.
Vocal Instruction
Vocal instruction for musical theater stresses correct breathing, vocal exercises, repertoire, style and performance practices. The repertoire will be based on popular songs from the musical theater literature.
